Rueil-Malmaison (french version)
A friendship pact between towns in different countries, twinning, has allowed the town of Fribourg to maintain close links with the French town of Rueil-Malmaison (département Hauts-de-Seine) since 1992. It was in this municipality in the Ile-de-France, with 80,000 inhabitants, that the Swiss Guards in the service of the French king were formerly stationed in the barracks constructed in 1756, one of the entrance pavilions of which nowadays houses the Franco-Swiss Museum. Close to Paris, this town, a source of inspiration to numerous impressionists, was also the residence of Napoleon I and Josephine. It served as the setting for the Treaty of Malmaison of 1801, the origin of the Act of Mediation of 1803 that inspired the Constitution of 1848 marking the official birth of modern Switzerland.
